Libraries

Growing up I remember going to the library every Sunday with my dad. Our neighborhood library was the old Zablocki center off of Lagrange street. I can remember how exciting it was to go and pick out new books to read for the week, browsing all the difference categories. To this day I can still smell that old plastic smell from opening the bags when checking out the books on tape. Reminiscing on those old times always leaves me with a warm cozy feeling. Literacy and learning were big parts of my childhood and when I thought about all the fun stuff I’d get to do with my son James, the library was my first thought. For this blog post I’d thought I’d share some of James and I’s favorite libraries (in no special order).

Oregon Branch

Living on the west end of Toledo, the Oregon branch is a drive for us but it is so worth the trip! From the outside it might not look like much but the children’s area is unlike any other. The interactive OHIO book cases (yup their books cases too) are so unique. Each letter has a different theme related to Ohio. The last O seems to be James’ favorite. Another cool feature are the interactive touch screens embedded into the walls. They are loaded with educational games for all ages. Oregon also offers story times for all ages.

Sanger Branch

If I had to pick a library that James and I feel most comfortable at it would be Sanger. Around seven months James started crawling and I started looking for funner activities for us to do. That’s when I found out about “baby time” at the library; James had so much fun we kept on coming back. The staff have always made us feel so welcomed even on the days where James isn’t being the most well behaved. They are always willing to help lend a hand. One of the reasons it’s our favorite rainy day spot is all the different toys the library keeps out. They even rotate the toys every so often to keep the kiddos interested. My favorite feature of this library is that the children’s section  can be closed off by a gate, keeping James from disturbing the rest of the library patrons.

Sylvania Branch

The Sylvania branch is a new discovery for us but it’s quickly become a favorite. They have a great selection of children’s picture books with a mix of oldies and new releases. James’ favorite feature is the beautiful work of art that was built to resemble a kitchen. Sylvania also offers story times for all ages.

Although these are our favorites a few others worth mentioning are: the west Toledo branch located off Sylvania near williys parkway, the kind road branch in Sylvania and the point place branch located on 117th st near summit st.
